Microsoft Surface for web designers

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Introduction

First off, what is Microsoft surface? Surface is a new and forthcoming desktop computer, but it has so much more to offer than the desktop we know and use on a day to day basis. On first glance, it may look like a simple desk or table, but it is actually a computer, with an enormous touch screen for input. There is still more to it, it syncs with devices and items that are placed on the Surface. This opens up so many possibilities, not only for technology to advance, but for web designers to produce sites in a new and exhilarating way.

Thinking outside the bubble

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Its time we rethink the web. For obvious reasons we can’t just recreate the web, but we can recreate the way we design and use the web on a daily basis. So let’s think outside the bubble and reconstruct the way we view the web. Here are my proposals as a web designer, on how to reshape the web and the way we use it.

Web 2.0 is more what we as designers currently strive for. It’s what companies trying to get into the online market are looking to for expanding their product. We achieve this look by shaving the sharp corners, and making them bubbly. We use vibrant, eye catching color combinations to keep the focus of the viewer on our content. User generated content, media uploads, blog posts and discussion boards are more things that can be considered Web 2.0. As life adapts I believe everything else needs to adapt along with it.

So let’s make a website that is aimed at the reader, putting all the reader wants and needs right at their fingertips. Making the site more interactive putting the desired content in the biggest area of view. Ads shouldn’t be in the middle of the main content of the page, this is a distraction and really steers away the reader from the content.

In my opinion, the focus on the Web 2.0 craze is the design and not the content. Almost like the content was thrown in after the design has been created. This should be the other way around, content then design. I know the design tells the viewer that the site is legitimate, cares about and knows about what they talk about. In reality though, if a person wanted to know about a subject so bad, they would read a black and white page to obtain the info.

Let’s put that to use. Let’s focus on the content and design around it. The content today is put in a box and graphics and ads surround it. It may be the center of the page, or attention grabbing, but is it the main focus of your website?
